NSW Police are still trying to determine the cause of yesterday's siege which saw a gun wielding man hold five hostages captive for 12-hours on the mid north coast.

An eight year old boy is among the five hostages to escape unharmed after the 41 year old man surrendered to police last night .. after a siege that lasted most of the day at Stuarts Point .. near Kempsey.

The man had fired shots at police as he barricaded himself inside a home on Stuarts Point Road.

Four older hostages were freed before midday .. but police were forced to continue their negotiations with the gunman until he finally gave himself up.

According to ABC online the siege was caused by a domestic dispute .. but they haven't revealed how the man and his hostages were related.
